The Anti-Slavery Society of Canada

The Anti-Slavery Society of Canada was set up to stop slavery in the United States. It was founded in 1851 by George Brown who later became one of Fathers of Confederation. The members formed the Society because they knew slavery was very bad. Slavery was stopped in Canada in 1793 when a Bill was passed that made it illegal to have slaves. But it was still legal in the United States.

The Society raised money for refugee relief and ran an adult night school that provided agricultural training. It also stopped slaves being sent back, opposed segregation and separate schools and sponsored anti-slavery speakers. George Brown used his newspaper, The Globe, to promote the anti-slavery cause.

The Society played an important role in ending slavery in the United States and helped many slaves to escape to freedom in Canada.
